Mortar device abandoned, Keady

19 Feb 2010

Police in Keady, County Armagh, have condemned the reckless actions of those who abandoned a viable mortar type device in the centre of the town on the morning of Friday 19 February.

Police received a report of an abandoned van in the Davis Street area of Keady. An investigation was launched and enquiries undertaken.

Army Technical Officers attended and a viable mortar type device was found inside the van. The device was made safe and taken away for examination.

Area Commander Chief Inspector Ken Mawhinney commented: "I would like to thank local residents for their patience and assistance during this operation and also the local community representatives and councillors who helped provide accommodation for those evacuated.

"Yet again a small group of criminal cowards have achieved nothing more than disruption and inconvenience for local people. This device had the potential to cause death or serious injury and those responsible have shown a reckless and callous disregard for the people of Keady.

"A thorough and active investigation is underway and I would appeal to anyone who has information, no matter how small it may seem, to contact us on 0845 600 8000. Information about crime can also be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111."
