Partial explosion of viable device Sweep Road Cookstown

10 Aug 2010

F District Commander Chief Superintendent Michael Skuce has condemned those reponsible for the attack on a police employee in Cookstown on Tuesday morning. 10 August.

The man was travelling along Sweep Road shortly after 8am when a device partially exploded under his red Ford Mondeo. He was not injured but was left extremely shocked.

Chief Superintendent Skuce said: "This man got up this morning to go to his normal day's work at Cookstown police station, unaware that some callous individuals had placed a viable explosive device underneath his car. This device was designed for one purpose – to kill and injure. Those who planted it showed absolutely no regard for anyone. This is a densely populated and busy area. The homes of many older people, along with a creche and many local businesses, are located just yards from where this explosion happened. We are fortunate that we are not dealing with a multiple murder here today.

"The people of Cookstown do not want this. I know that we have the community's support and I know they stand with us today.

"I would appeal to the local community to demonstrate that support by helping us identify those responsible. I would particularly appeal to anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the Glenavon Park, Sweep Road or Drum Road areas between Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning to get in touch with us.

Detectives can be contacted on 0845 600 8000. "
