The murder of Constable Stephen Carroll - first anniversary appeal

09 Mar 2010

Detectives appeal for information on first anniversary of officer's murder

On the first anniversary of the murder of PSNI Constable Stephen Carroll Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Richard Harkness, of the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch, made an appeal for information.

“The investigation into the murder of Constable Stephen Carroll continues one year on.

Three people have been charged in connection with this case, and the investigation team is grateful for the assistance received so far from the public.

I believe that there are a number of people in the Craigavon area who saw what happened to Stephen, and saw who killed him.  These people have yet to come forward and talk to police.

These witnesses may have information that could be of great help to our enquiries.  There is a specific incident room set up for the enquiry team investigating Stephen Carroll’s murder.  The number to call is 0845 600 8000 and ask to speak to detectives at Mahon Road in Portadown on extension number 44148,” said the detective.

The night he was murdered, Stephen had driven his colleagues to Lismore Manor in Craigavon on March 9 last year in response to a call for help from a member of the community.  This should have been a routine call, but a gunman was lying in wait for a police patrol and fired at Stephen and his colleagues.  Stephen was killed.  His family still struggles to come to terms with losing him in such a violent and pointless way.

Stephen Carroll was a highly respected and very experienced police officer.  He, like his colleagues, never shied away from his responsibility to serve the people of Northern Ireland.

Anyone who was in the area of Lismore Manor, Craigavon, between 9pm and 10pm on March 9 2009, or anyone with information on Constable Carroll’s murder, is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000.  Alternatively, information can be given anonymously to the Crimestoppers Charity on 0800 555 111."
