Why did you join the Police Service?

I joined the Police Service of Northern Ireland in 2022 because I wanted a new challenge. Growing up, no one in my family had a policing background, but I always felt a deep sense of responsibility to contribute something to the community I lived in. What excited me the most was the wide variety of roles within the PSNI, from frontline policing to specialist units.

What do you enjoy most about your role as a probationary constable?

What I enjoy most about being a probationary constable is the incredible variety of roles and the constant opportunity for growth. From responding to emergencies, conducting investigations, engaging with the community, every day brings something new. I’ve gained first-hand experience in roles I never imagined I would have, all while working alongside dedicated colleagues who have become like family.

The camaraderie within the team is something truly special; no matter the situation, we always have each other’s backs. This sense of unity and support makes even the toughest challenges easier to face. On top of this, I’m obtaining a university degree as part of my training, which is an incredible opportunity I wouldn’t have found anywhere else.

The combination of practical experience, academic learning, and the chance to make a real difference in my community makes this role truly unique and rewarding.

What do you find most challenging?

The challenges I face as a probationary constable are often physically and emotionally demanding. The long hours can take their toll, as shifts can be unpredictable, and there's little time to rest between calls. Witnessing incidents that will stay with me forever is one of the hardest parts of the job. Some moments are difficult to process, and the weight of certain situations can linger long after the shift ends.

What do you hope to achieve in your career?

In my career, I’m excited to keep growing and taking on new challenges. Over the last two years, I’ve really enjoyed response policing and the chance to make a difference in those high-pressure situations. But I’m also eager to try something new. One of my goals is to work my way up to Sergeant, where I can take on more responsibility and help lead others. I’m also interested in moving into neighbourhood policing, where I can build stronger connections with local communities, or maybe even join the dog unit.
