The primary function of the Close Protection Unit is to provide protection to designated persons under significant threat in Northern Ireland.
These include senior Politicians, senior Police officers and members of the legal system. The Close Protection Unit also undertakes protection responsibilities for individuals visiting Northern Ireland. This includes members of the Royal family, international visitors and even the President of the United States.
The Close Protection Unit is made up of 125 Police Officers who deploy across Northern Ireland on a daily basis. So far in 2015 the Close protection Unit have planned and completed 30 VIP visits. These are high profile operations with the Close Protection Unit working closely with PSNI colleagues in District Policing, search advisors and senior Police. VIP visitors in 2015 have included the Prince of Wales, President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins and Prime Minister David Cameron.
