To encourage more people with diverse backgrounds and experiences to join the police, we've talked to some of our current Student Officers to find out why they joined the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
Read Student Officer Houston's experience below.
“I love the practical side of training, particularly the role plays as they gave us the most realistic representation of what policing is really like.”
Why did you join the Police Service?
Previously, I worked in the retail sector - so I felt my interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team would help me succeed in the role of a Police Officer.
What are you enjoying most about the Student Officer Training?
I love the practical side of training, particularly the role plays as they gave us the most realistic representation of what policing is really like.
I feel the course ensures we are equipped with the skills that we need to help the public when they need us.
What do you hope to achieve as a Police Officer?
One of the most appealing aspects of joining the Police is the sheer scope of possibilities for progression between all the different departments within the organisation. I hope to go on to serve the community as a member of the dog handling unit,TSG, or possibly the Serious Crime Branch.
