Barry Donnelly was sentenced today, Tuesday 4 July, for the manslaughter of Aiden Mann in County Down in January 2022.
Donnelly, aged 38, appeared before Belfast Crown Court, having previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
He will serve an indeterminate custodial sentence, with a minimum tariff of nine years.
Aiden Mann died after being attacked in Church Street, Downpatrick.
Detective Inspector Foreman said: “Aiden, who was just 28 years old, was fatally stabbed on 3 January 2022. This was in Church Street, in the late morning, when members of the public were going about their business.
“Aiden was chased by Barry Donnelly, before being stabbed repeatedly in this totally shocking attack.
Detective Inspector Foreman continued: “I’m extremely keen to thank those members of the public who ran to Aiden’s assistance, and who phoned emergency services. I’d also like to acknowledge the efforts of paramedics who tried so hard to save Aiden’s life. Sadly, despite best efforts, Aiden was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This senseless attack has taken a young person’s life. There are no words that can undo the tragic events of that morning. There’s nothing that can ease the pain and sadness of those who knew and loved Aiden, and my thoughts are very much with them today.”
