Detectives from Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Public Protection Branch (PPB) have welcomed the 6 years and 9 months sentence (half to be served in prison and half on licence) handed down to a 62 year old man after he pleaded guilty to Rape, Attempted Rape, Sexual Assault by Penetration and Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm.
The sentence was handed down at Belfast Crown court earlier today in connection with a brutal domestic incident which took place in May 2020
Detective Constable Adams from PPB said: “No one should feel unsafe in their own home or with their partner, and this sentence sends the message to perpetrators of abuse that there are consequences and penalties for violent and abusive actions within relationships.
Domestic abuse is a terrifying crime that can affect anyone. It takes a lot of strength and fortitude to come forward and make a complaint, and to see that complaint through the criminal justice system. The abuse survivor in this case has displayed enormous courage throughout.
