To encourage more people with diverse backgrounds and experiences to join the police, we've talked to some of our current Student Officers to find out why they joined the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Read a current Student Officer's experience below.

Life in the police college

“Being in the Police College has been great. I’ve enjoyed spending time with my colleagues and building up that team bond - I know I have made friends for life.”

Why did you join the Police Service?
I’ve always wanted to be a Police Officer.

Before joining, I worked with local youth groups and members of the public. I really enjoyed meeting new people, developing others and making a difference. So with a bit of persistence, I completed the applications and was accepted in the 2020 campaign.

What are you enjoying most about the Student Officer Training?
Being in the Police College has been great. I’ve enjoyed spending time with my colleagues and building up that team bond - I know I have made friends for life.

I’ve enjoyed all aspects of the training, but most of all, I’ve enjoyed the more practical side of things and getting to apply the theory we’ve learnt in the classroom to real-life situations.

What do you hope to achieve as a Police Officer?
At the minute, I want to just get into my Local Policing Team and see how I adapt to that fast-paced environment.

Further down the line, I think I would like to explore child protection - even if I could make a difference to one family, I think this would be a very rewarding role.
