Request
I’d like to ask, given the current financial pressures facing your service and the recent developments relating to the proposed 2025 Student Officer Recruitment Campaign, has there been consideration given to permitting Direct Entry at Constable Level, to attract candidates from services within Northern Ireland such as Belfast Harbour Police or Belfast International Airport Police or indeed from Services across in GB, candidates who already hold various qualifications such as Firearms, Police Driver and the Policing Degree etc.?

Candidates who would already have completed a Student Officer Training Programme or equivalent within the last two calendar years.

Answer
There is currently no legislative provision for serving officers in other police services to laterally transfer to the Police Service of Northern Ireland, although we are actively exploring this option as a future recruitment pathway.

At this time, the only routes available for serving officers to join PSNI are via the Student Officer recruitment programme, or through our promotion processes for Chief Inspector and above. Serving officers are welcome to apply to our upcoming Student Officer recruitment campaign, which will be open for applications via our recruitment website www.joinpsni.co.uk from 22nd January 2025.

Applicants who successfully complete all stages of the recruitment process are required to complete the 22 week Student Officer Development Programme upon appointment, regardless of their previous experience. However, where a candidate is a serving officer in another police service, consideration may be given to waiving part, or all, of the probationary period after attestation. Continuity of service, and pension / salary are also protected, and allowances are available to assist with removal expenses where applicable.
