Request
I am submitting this request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to seek clarification on the PSNI’s medical assessment process, specifically regarding the use of medication and its impact on recruitment and firearms authorisation.
Request 1
How does the PSNI assess applicants who are prescribed fluoxetine during the medical screening process?
Answer 1
Every case is individual with their own variables. An OHW Medical Adviser will make the final decision.
Request 2
Would taking fluoxetine automatically disqualify an applicant from recruitment or require further review?
Answer 2
Generally no, taking Fluoxetine would not automatically disqualify an applicant from recruitment. It depends if the use is long-term and the reason for the prescribed medication. An OHW Medical Adviser makes the final decision.
Request 3
How does the PSNI distinguish between fluoxetine prescribed for autism-related symptoms (such as emotional regulation) versus fluoxetine prescribed for depression or anxiety?
Answer 3
The OHW Medical Adviser will make the final decision. In cases where further information is required, the OHW Medical Adviser may write to the GP requesting a report to assist with decision making processes.
Request 4
If fluoxetine is considered a concern, are there alternative medications that would be more acceptable for applicants who require treatment for autism-related symptoms?
Answer 4
The OHW Medical Adviser will make the final decision. Any prescribed medications such as Fluoxetine is undertaken by a GP.
Request 5
How does the use of atomoxetine compare to fluoxetine in terms of its impact on medical suitability and firearms approval?
Answer 5
There is no evidence for comparison.
Request 6
Is there any formal guidance or policy document available regarding the assessment of applicants who take medication for autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?
Answer 6
There is no formal guidance or policy document.
Clarification requested:
Could you please clarify if their questions relate to the medical assessment an applicant undertakes as part of the PSNI’s Recruitment Process?
Clarification received:
Yes, I mean particularly in terms of the current student police officer recruitment campaign.
