A company has been fined for the highest level of Health and Safety breaches following the death of a man in 2019.

McCauley Trailers Ltd, who previously pleaded guilty to the offences in June have incurred one of the highest ever fines in Northern Ireland following Health & Safety breaches.

At Antrim Court on Wednesday 27th August, the company was fined £175,000 for Health and Safety breaches for the offences of Article 4 (1) of the Health & Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978b and Regulation 3 (1) of the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations (NI) 2000.

43-year-old Maciej Wieczorek was fatally injured following a workplace incident in Antrim on Wednesday 4th September 2019. Following the incident, a file was submitted by police to the Public Prosecution who directed prosecution against McCauley Trailers Ltd.

Detective Inspector Lenaghan said: “Firstly, our thoughts are with the family of Mr. Wieczorek following the death of Maciej in September 2019. Nothing will bring him back, but we hope today brings closure for Maciej’s loved ones.

“This was a joint investigation between the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Health and Safety Executive of Northern Ireland.

"Today’s sentencing sends a clear message to those who flout the law. This conviction should be a stark reminder to all that legislation is there for a reason and of the subsequent consequences if it is not adhered to.

“The Police Service of Northern Ireland will continue to work in partnership with statutory agencies to tackle and address all crime.”
