All road users have a part to play in keeping traffic flowing this Christmas and keep yellow box junctions clear.

We would remind road users that blocking yellow box junctions not only adds significantly to congestion, but also increases the risk to pedestrians.

When our patrol officers observe traffic offences in relation to blocking yellow box junctions, they will be addressed.

The first stage will be to engage with motorists, explain the offence and its consequences and encourage compliance.

Where this guidance is ignored, enforcement may be the appropriate response.

The current penalty for breach of a yellow box junction is a fine, however, we would remind road users that stopping within the limits of a pedestrian crossing is an endorsable offence, carrying a fine and three penalty points. Further fines exist regarding unlawful use of bus lanes and violation of traffic signs.

We will be supporting our colleagues in the Department for Infrastructure to help #KeepBelfastMoving this Festive season.
