Police in Derry/Londonderry have arrested a man following reports of vehicle tampering and criminal damage in the city.
Officers attended the Epworth Street area at approximately 5am this morning, Saturday 7th March, after it was reported a man was breaking into and damaging vehicles.
Chief Inspector Cathal Pearce said: “As a result, a number of cars parked in the area had their windows smashed and ransacked inside.
“The suspect was located a short distance away by officers inside a vehicle that did not belong to him.
“He was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including theft, vehicle tampering, vehicle interference and criminal damage, and remains in custody at this time as our enquiries continue.”
Chief Inspector Pearce continued: “We would like to reassure the local community that we take all reports of suspicious activity seriously.
“If something doesn’t look right in your area – or you notice suspicious behaviour, please report it to us immediately so we can investigate thoroughly.
“Thanks to the local community for promptly reporting this incident, our officers were able to act quickly and arrest this individual – we are grateful to them for their support with this matter.
“Anyone with information that could assist our investigation or noticed suspicious behaviour in the area is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 233 07/03/26.
“We would also be keen to hear from anyone who may have CCTV or mobile footage of the area shortly before the time of the report that we could review.”
