Police from Derry City and Strabane District Support Team (DST) along with Local Policing Team (LPT) have arrested a man after reports of a suspected driver under the influence of drink or drugs earlier in the day in the Main Street area of Ballykelly, Tuesday 25th June.

The man, aged 36 was stopped by officers in the Buncrana Road area of Derry/Londonderry and arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including driving whilst unfit through drink or drug, assault on police, resisting police, disorderly behaviour and criminal damage to a police vehicle, which will now be off the road until repaired.

He remains in police custody at this time.

Inspector Pearce said: “It is extremely worrying and deeply frustrating that people are disregarding the safety of others and themselves by taking the incredibly dangerous decision to drive after drinking. We are thankful that there were no injuries to others on this occasion.

“Police will continue to use all the powers and legislation at our disposal to detect people who insist on driving after having taken drugs or alcohol. All motorists need to take into account the consequences of their actions. Never take the risk of having even one drink if you are driving.”
