A 58-year-old man has today been extradited from the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland. 

The man was arrested in the Republic of Ireland on 8th December 2021 on foot of an extradition warrant.  Today, Tuesday 13th May completed extradition proceedings with his successful return to Northern Ireland.

He was subject to an investigation by the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Terrorism Investigation Unit.  He is sought to stand trial for offences of belonging to a proscribed organisation, directing terrorism, conspiracy to direct terrorism and preparation of acts of terrorism as part of Operation Arbacia, an investigation into the activities of the New IRA.  These offences occurred in the Omagh area in July 2020. He will appear before Omagh Magistrates' Court later today. 

Sergeant Davey from the International Policing Unit said: “Today’s extradition demonstrates our continued and effective working with partners to track down wanted persons and bring offenders to justice.  The Police Service of Northern Ireland continues to work closely with authorities in the Republic of Ireland to locate and return those wanted to stand trial in Northern Ireland. 

“In this particular case, we worked closely with the PSNI's Terrorism Investigation Unit and An Garda Síochána to locate this man and bring him before the courts.  

“PSNI will relentlessly pursue those sought to stand trial in this jurisdiction.”
