A man has been sentenced at court following an attempted robbery in Newtownhamilton.

Sean McQuillan, aged 30, was sentenced at Newry Crown Court today, Monday 29th June, for the attempted robbery of commercial premises on Friday 7th February 2025.

At an earlier hearing, McQuillan had entered a guilty plea to charges of attempted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon. Today, he was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, with one year to be served in custody and two years to be served on licence.

Commenting, Detective Inspector Moffett, Criminal Investigations Department, said: “McQuillan entered the shop on Dundalk Street and approached the counter where a teenage member of staff was working.

“He passed a note reading “ROBBERY – MONEY IN BAG FAST I WILL KILL I AM ARMED” and a bag under the glass screen, while wielding a knife.

“The staff member has the presence of mind to press a panic alarm and McQuillan fled the scene empty handed, leaving the note and bag in the shop.

“Following forensic and CCTV analysis, McQuillan was identified as the suspect. He was arrested in April 2025 and charged following interview.”

Detective Inspector Moffett continued: “This was a terrifying ordeal for the young member of staff who showed great courage and resilience in the circumstances.

“Today’s sentencing sends a clear message to anyone who would use the threat of force or violence against innocent members of the public that we will robustly pursue them in order to see them face justice for their crime.”
