The Police Service is delighted to announce that Omagh Neighbourhood Policing Team Sergeant Johnny Hamill is to be honoured with the esteemed British Citizen Award (BCA) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to his local community and wider society.
Sergeant Hamill, who has more than 20 years of service in policing, will receive his medal of Honour for Services to theCommunity (BCAc) at the Palace of Westminster on 23 July.
Fermanagh and Omagh District Commander Superintendent Pete Cunningham said: “I am thrilled to see Johnny receive this honour, it so very well deserved.
Johnny is the absolute embodiment of Neighbourhood Policing and a shining example of what we as a service stand for. His dedication, professionalism and selflessness is evident in everything he does from community outreach to work with local youth groups, to personally learning sign language so he could better communicate with our deaf and hearing impaired residents.
As a Doctor of History, Johnny also has a keen interest in our newcomer communities and has developed and delivered a programme called the Migrant In Us All, which highlights the parallels between modern day migration and that from Ireland in the nineteenth century. The programme has brought together people from across the full spectrum of our society to share their experiences and recognise our commonalities.
His commitment to his community is second to none and this honour not only recognises that but also highlights the exceptional compassion, teamwork and resilience that Johnny brings to everything he does to make Omagh a safe and thriving community for all.”
