As a Police Service, Keeping People Safe is what we do, and Policing with the Community is how we do it.

Effective health and safety management will support keeping people safe, both Police Service personnel and the community at large with whom we as a Police Service interact and come into daily contact.

Policing in Northern Ireland is both exceptional and unique. Therefore, what would be considered critical in any other United Kingdom policing jurisdiction is both normal and ongoing business for the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the context against which all policing activity and relationships are delivered, including health and safety statutory compliance. This is reflected in the health and safety approach necessary when considering 'suitable and sufficient' control measures and the associated safe systems of work in order to provide an effectively frontline service delivery to the community whilst still complying with the statutory obligations on the organisation.

The purpose of Health and Safety Branch is to support frontline policing by ensuring that timely professional advice is provided and support the development of both proactive and reactive health and safety policies and procedures, assist in the implementation, monitoring and reviewing to ensure bureaucracy is kept to the minimum.

This in turn will assist in enabling the Police Service to continue to develop and maintain a highly skilled, responsive, flexible and safety motivated workforce capable of delivering a quality 24/7 service to the whole community against a continuing period of very challenging financial pressures.
