Request Number: FOI/14655

Category: Roads Policing and Safety Cameras - Fixed Penalty Notice

Subject: Breach of Signs & Signals

Request and Answer:

Request 1
We would like to find out the total number of detections for the 11 Northern Ireland Council areas for breach of signs and signals amongst motoring offences for the last 12 months available - giving us an idea of the total number of offences then split into each council area.

Request 2
Would it also be possible to have information on the penalties imposed as a result for these offences?  So that we have it split into the totals for detections and penalties in each council area, that would be very helpful.

The original request I examined was for the number of motoring offences in Northern Ireland for the last recorded period:

Request 3
Are we ok to use the information in a press release we are compiling about motoring offences?
(We are planning to issue a press release around the fact that only one of the Northern Ireland motoring offences showed an increase in detections over the past year, breach of signs and signals saw an increase of 9% and other road signs drivers might find confusing.)

Answer 3
In response to using the information in a press release, it should be noted that the table above and the published data refer to offence groups as opposed to individual offences. Each offence group, including ‘Breach of signs and signals’ comprise numerous individual offences, some of which may have increased over the same time period, whilst not resulting in an increase in the overall offence group. A list of the offences included in each offence group can be found on the PSNI motoring offences statistics webpage – see Full list of motoring offences.

Based on the provisional figures for 1st March 2024 to 28th February 2025, the increase in terms of the breach of signs and signals offence group was 15% compared to 1st March 2023 to 28th February 2024, which equates to 26 additional detections over the year.
